Amazon Cat Toy Buying Guide

Gray cat playing with feather toy

Finding great cat toys on Amazon is easy, but there are a few things to remember as you browse all those options. Here’s what to consider before you make your purchase.

Consider a product shipped by Amazon. Before you click that ‘Buy Now’ button, it’s worth checking to see if the product is listed as ‘Fulfilled by Amazon.’ This means it’s shipped from one of Amazon’s own distribution centers rather than directly from the seller. Choosing a product that’s delivered by Amazon means you’re more likely to be able to take advantage of your Prime benefits like next day delivery.

Double check the manufacturer. Amazon is a very safe place to buy from, but there are a lot of third-party sellers to sift through. Choosing a product included in a review (like this one!) means you’re able to head straight to the best selling toys that have already been tried and tested by thousands of cat owners. If you want to check out more details about the manufacturer, click on their name in the purchase panel and check out their details.

Read the reviews. Customer reviews are a great way to discover if a toy lives up to the hype of a manufacturer’s description. In addition to checking the overall star rating of a product, scroll down and have a read through some of the reviews from other buyers. Look for mentions that the toy is well made, durable, and that cats love it! You can also read specific reviews, like all one-star reviews if you want to find out the not-so-good points. The Customer questions and answer section also usually contains plenty of useful information.

Amazon Cat Toy FAQs

Still not sure what toy to choose for your cat? We answer some of your most frequently asked questions, right here.

What kind of toys do cats like?

There’s no one toy that’s going to suit all cats—because they’re all unique just like we are! You know your cat best, so if they love stalking and bouncing, then they’ll probably love a kicker toy. If they’re obsessed with fast movements, then a laser toy could be the thing for them. In general, it’s best to make sure your cat has a variety of different toys, and any of the cat toys on Amazon that made our list are a good place to start!

Are catnip toys bad for cats?

No, catnip toys are not bad for cats. In fact most cats adore catnip! But a cat’s response to catnip is genetic, and around 20-30 percent of cats show no response at all to this herb. If your cat isn’t affected by catnip then there’s no point buying them these toys. It’s also worth bearing in mind that kittens don’t react to catnip until they’re around six months old. The scent of catnip also fades over time, so you might decide to keep these toys in a ziploc bag between play sessions.

Are laser toys bad for cats?

Laser toys are not bad for cats, but they should be used with caution. While most cats adore chasing a laser, they can become frustrated if they feel like they’re never technically catching their prey, because they can’t actually touch the laser! It’s best to keep sessions with a laser toy short, around five minutes or so. And just as you finish up, place a plush or kicker toy on the floor, point the laser on it, and allow your cat the reward of catching their prey.

Why do cats get bored with toys?

If your cat has access to the same toy all the time, the novelty and excitement will gradually wear off, and you may notice your cat plays with their toy less and less. Variety really is the spice of life, so make sure your cat has access to a range of different toys. When they’re not in use, place some toys in a drawer or box, and bring them out another day. Your cat will love discovering what they’re going to play with today!
