Video: Training to Help Calm a Dog Who Barks and Lunges on Leash
Published on October 05, 2015
If your dog barks, lunges or otherwise acts unruly on leash when another dog walks by, trainer Mikkel Becker is here to help. Reacting on leash is one of the most common problems people have with their dogs. You can help your dog move from chaotic to calm when passing other canines by teaching a new command he can be rewarded for: turn away.
Training your dog to turn and move away is an excellent strategy for calming him, since it rewards his relaxed behavior with space from the upsetting situation. Most reactions on leash are more about the display than actual intent to bite. However, it’s important to consult your veterinarian or a veterinary behaviorist for their guidance on your dog’s behavior, especially if you’re uncertain how your dog would act if he ever got close to the dog or if he has a history of aggression with other dogs.
Check out Mikkel Becker’s video below for her advice on training this highly useful behavior.
