Maintaining a flea and tick prevention routine is an important responsibility of being a pet parent. Ticks and fleas carry bacteria and illnesses that can lead to significant health problems for your pets—and your family. That’s why you might explore a flea and tick prevention solution that makes this responsibility easier, safer, and greener.

Many pet parents are exploring chemical-free alternatives because they want a natural flea prevention product or don’t want to handle a chemical-based flea product containing harmful insecticides. Ultrasonic devices make it easy to help keep fleas at bay and reduce tick bites on your dog without chemicals.

I tested the Tickless Ultrasonic Flea & Tick Device on my dog, and here’s what happened.

What is the Tickless Ultrasonic Tick and Flea Tag?

The Tickless Pet brand’s mission is to make it clean, safe, and easy for pet parents to prevent fleas and ticks.

Ultrasonic technology may help prevent fleas and ticks from burrowing on your dog by agitating them with ultrasonic sound frequencies (40 KHz) that are imperceptible to humans and pets but can be detected by fleas and ticks. Tickless Pet’s dog ultrasonic repeller device exudes ultrasonic pulses that annoy ticks and fleas, helping to keep them away or prevent bites when ticks have already attached to our dogs. The ultrasonic waves are meant to maintain an operating range of 5 feet.

The company recommends always keeping the Tickless Pet Ultrasonic Flea & Tick Device on your pet’s collar or harness. If you take the collar off when your dog is home, as I often do, you should use its Tickless Home Device.

What sets this product apart? Puppies, pregnant animals, dogs, cats, and even sick pets can wear the Tickless chemical-free solution to ticks and fleas. It can be used on all sizes of pets, is easy to attach, and the battery lasts for at least six months.

I tried the Tickless Pet Ultrasonic tick and flea device tag on my 90-pound dog. The brand also makes Tickless Pet Mini, which has an eight-foot operating range for all sizes of dogs and cats.

We also like that this high-efficiency device doesn’t need to be charged or thought about for six months, which—I’ll be honest—is a big selling point in my book! (If you get the Tickless Mini, it’s rechargeable with a Type C cable.)

We like that Tickless Pet offers a six-month warranty for any product malfunction and uses a coin battery that ensures long-lasting performance.

The Tickless Pet brand’s mission is to “strive for a plastic neutrality,” and they contribute to a greener and cleaner future with its sustainable alternative products.

Putting The Tickless Ultrasonic Tick and Flea Tag to the Test

Before being asked to test this ultrasonic tick and flea device, I never heard of the technology used to help prevent tick bites and fleas. It’s exciting and a great, chemical-free solution to help prevent fleas and ticks.

In the past, after exploring how to prevent ticks on dogs, I used to apply a chemical solution between our thick-coated dog’s shoulder blades to help prevent fleas. But I never felt I was doing it correctly (the fur would get wet). A few years ago, after a vacation in a wooded area, my husband found a big brown tick on our dog about a week after we returned. Luckily, our dog was okay, but it was a good reminder to step up our tick prevention game and ensure we did a tick check after walks.

As soon as I opened the package, I liked the simplicity of this device. All I had to do was open the metal attachment and slide the device on it. I removed the tab to activate the Tickles ultrasonic device. Then, I attached it to my dog’s collar. I called my nine-year-old Coonhound-German Shepherd-Labrador Retriever mix dog to put his collar on. (He was excited because that usually means we’re going on a walk.)

The instructions recommend “bathe your pet with a flea shampoo” before applying this. I didn’t do that. For a high-tech resolution to flea and tick problems, having simple steps to kickstart the device is a “pro” for this user.

I turned the dog flea and tick prevention device on by pressing it and saw four flashes, letting me know it was activated. My dog, Jackson, didn’t notice the change in weight on his collar with the device attached.

We usually walk around our Long Island, New York neighborhood, and I occasionally take him to the dog park or a more wooded area when the weather is nice. I would never have considered ticks a concern for my dog in March (when I was testing the product) where we live, but I discovered that they are most active from March to mid-May (and August to November) in my state.

I’m a working mom who’s the primary caretaker of two kids under five, so having “one less thing to think about” regarding my dog’s flea and tick prevention is a plus. This device’s “set it and forget it” aspect for six months is a significant appeal.

The Tickless product manual says its effectiveness “depends on the condition of the animal’s coat,” which means whether it’s well-groomed or if it’s more difficult to spot parasites on longer fur. My dog has an extra-thick coat—especially in the winter, so I hope it’s effective.

For testing, I walked my dog through our neighborhood, including tall grasses where ticks famously gather, and took him to the groomer, exposing him to other dogs. Watching him interact in close quarters and sniff the same tall grasses another neighborhood dog had just passed through, I felt reassured knowing he wore a dog flea and tick prevention device.

Things We Like

The Tickless device is easy to use and can give pet parents peace of mind when their dogs are exposed to other dogs or tick-problem areas.  We sometimes take our dog to the dog park, and an overnight group dog boarding facility, and having this type of tick and flea prevention mechanism on our pup would make me feel better.

It’s so lightweight and small (1.5″ x 1.1″) that my dog never reacted to it being on his collar. I waited until it was on him to “turn the device on” by pressing it, and I was glad that the ultrasonic waves had a “nonreaction” from my pet. The website says only bugs like ticks and fleas could detect it, but I wanted to be sure it didn’t seem to disturb my pup’s hearing.

I like that it’s water-resistant although it’s not waterproof. It could be dried and used again if it gets wet. But ideally, you’d remove it first if your dog was going to jump in a body of water. (Some customer reviews said their dogs have gone swimming with it, and it still works.)

Things to Consider

The Tickless Ultrasonic Tick and Flea device helps with prevention; it can’t help your pet if they’ve already been bitten by a tick or infested with fleas. Take your pet to their veterinarian if that’s the case.

I like the chemical-free aspect of this prevention method, but the packaging warns that this small product could be a potential “choking” hazard for young children. While it’s never fallen off the collar after I slipped it on, this element would have given me pause when having young children crawling around in case it came off my dog’s collar, and I didn’t notice.

Since this flea prevention product is affordable and can run on a coin battery for six months, it’s a cost-effective, chemical-free tick prevention solution. It’s significantly cheaper than a monthly prescription for a chewable tick and flea prevention solution and about a midrange cost compared to various tick collars for dogs.

Note that for testing, I didn’t take my dog to a tick-infested woods during the height of tick season or try to find a tick and see if this collar kept it away. I also didn’t put him in the company of flea-infested dog friends to see if the ultrasonic waves kept fleas away. (No thanks!) The product instructions note that “in an area heavily populated by ticks,” the effectiveness may be reduced. Always perform due diligence as a pet parent and check your dog for ticks or fleas.

The Tickless Ultrasonic Tick and Flea Tag to the Test: Our Verdict

This chemical-free, fragrance-free electronic device designed to help prevent ticks and fleas is a great option. The no-mess, no-fuss device is easy to set up and use, and my dog never noticed it was there. The company seems committed to its environmentally-focused brand mission—even the Tickless Pet paper packaging could be recycled, and it says it’s “carbon neutral printed.”

I’d continue using this dog flea and tick prevention product for my dog, especially as the weather gets nicer where I live. We’ll go on more nature walks, meet with dog friends in the park, and take our dog to a pet boarding facility on vacation. If my dog was concerned about wearing one more thing around his neck—like a tick collar—this could also be a solution for that dog.

If you’re considering easy-to-implement flea prevention and tick prevention treatment for your dog and are sick of messy applicators or concerned about chemical-ridden collars, the Tickless Pet products are a great option to try.
