The Scoop on Dog Pooper Scoopers

Pooper scoopers do just that, scoop poop. And any pet parent knows having a dog means lots of poop to clean up! Responsible owners clean up after their pets — not only can dog poop be smelly and gross, but it can also pollute waterways and transmit disease. Don’t use it as a compost or throw it on your plants, either, since it’s not a fertilizer and can kill your plants.

While many people rely on poop bags alone, pooper scoopers can make cleaning up quicker and less messy (especially if you have multiple dogs or an entire backyard to clean). Anyone can use a pooper scooper, but they can be especially helpful for people with limited mobility. As a bonus, they can be used with one hand and without bending over or squatting down, depending on which one you use.

Types of Dog Pooper Scoopers

How you plan to use your pooper scooper will dictate which type you buy. For example, is it for backyard clean-ups or taking on walks? There are a few types you might encounter:

Rake: Rake and bucket pooper scoopers are best for backyard clean-ups. The buckets often hold more waste than other types, and they hold onto them better, too. These pooper scoopers usually have long handles that are great for those with limited mobility.

Claw: Claw pooper scoopers grab and hold onto your dog’s poop. These can be one- or two-handed, with a range of handle lengths. Take a smaller one on a walk. Larger styles are best for backyards.

Compact: Compact pooper scoopers are small enough to take on walks or while traveling. These are smaller for clipping onto leashes, and they are best paired with bags so that the tool stays clean and it’s easy to toss the poop bag when you reach a garbage can.

Robotic: While not available yet (at least not widely), robotic pooper scoopers are an exciting concept. Similar to a robotic vacuum, these devices roam around your yard, recognize poop and then scoop it up.

Dog Pooper Scooper Buying Guide

Choosing the right pooper scooper for you starts by deciding on the design and how you plan to use the pooper scooper. If you want to take it on walks, look at those with a compact design. If you are cleaning up your backyard (and dealing with multiple piles), a rake and bucket style might be best for you.

If you have limited mobility, that will also affect the type you choose. Some pooper scoopers have long handles that can be used easily from an upright position. Others have a one-handed design that can be used with minimal effort. Both of these can be helpful.

Look at the scooper size and how it compares to your pet’s size. Larger dogs produce larger poops! Make sure you choose a big enough scooper, and consider if you’ll need to pick up multiple piles at once.

Lots of pooper scoopers can be paired with bags for a cleaner experience (some even have built-in bag dispensers). This makes cleaning the actual pooper scooper easier. A metal scooper is also ideal, although many are made with quality plastic or anti-microbial materials.

Whatever you choose, there are options for every budget.

How to Poop Scoop Like a Pro

We spoke to Mike Lechliter, owner of Pooper Scooper Pros in Buffalo, NY, for tips on using pooper scoopers and how to choose the best one for you.

“When choosing a pooper scooper product, the first thing I look for is if it’s easy to clean! It’s not fun trying to clean out poo from small, hard-to-reach crevices,” said Lechliter. “The next thing I consider is size. If you have three or more dogs, the scooper size you will need will be significantly larger than a single dog owner. Before purchasing, think, how much waste do I typically pick up each week? Then make your decision from there.” (Try one of the above pooper scoopers that use a large bucket if this is the case for you.)

He also recommends choosing products that feel durable and well-made. “Some products are made from cheap plastics that can break and/or lose their quality quickly.”

When it comes to cleaning, use a spray cleaner with bleach. “This will help to ensure that you are killing all the bacteria and anything that may be harmful! Then wipe the tools clean of the cleaner with a wet rag or paper towel,” he said.

Happy scooping!
